Nashville, TN – Incident Rate (TRIR) IME recognized six member companies for an incredible achievement in safety. Each of the six companies listed below have achieved a zero TRIR, based on 2017 data.

Davey Bickford USA, Salt Lake City, UT
Detotec North America, Inc., Sterling, CT
Maine Drilling & Blasting, Auburn, NH
Senex Explosives, Cuddy, PA
Teledyne RISI, Tracy, CA
Vet’s Explosives, Torrington, CT
These six companies exemplify the explosives industry’s commitment to safety, and the spirit of Tricia Appleton.  For IME member companies, safety is foundational to our culture.  On a daily basis, we make conscious efforts  to reinforce and engrain safety into all of our operations and processes,” stated Seth Hobby, Chairman of IME’s Board of Governors.

Nicholas Harrington, Chairman of the IME Safety & Health Committee Safety, stated, “Following in the footsteps of Ms. Appleton, it is a privilege to present the award named in her honor to these companies for their outstanding commitment to the safety of their employees. Achieving a TRIR rate of zero is a significant accomplishment.”

In 2017 the Committee switched from the DART rate, as calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to the TRC rate, calculated by OSHA, with the understanding that metric will provide a more accurate representation of a company’s commitment to safety.   The Tricia Appleton Award for Safety is given in the memory of a long-time employee of IME member company Jet Research Center/Halliburton who was influential in establishing IME’s annual award for excellence in safety just prior to her untimely death in 2002 in an automobile accident.  The year following Tricia’s death, and in all subsequent years, IME members have achieved a near 100% participation rate in the IME Injury & Illness Reporting Program – the very goal that Tricia had hoped the establishment of the safety award would accomplish.

Founded in 1913, IME is the safety & security association for the commercial explosives industry in the U.S.  IME represents manufacturers of commercial explosives and other companies that distribute explosives or provide related services.  Commercial explosives are used in every state in the union and are distributed worldwide.  The ability to manufacture and distribute these products safely and securely is critical to this industry and to the mining, construction, and oil & gas industries that use our products.  IME’s Safety Library Publications cover all aspects related to the safe and secure manufacture, transport, storage, use and disposal of commercial explosives and are available for free via our website.
