Senators Weigh in Against Expanding RMP to Ammonium Nitrate
10/29/2014
Senators John Barrasso (R-WY), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Michael Enzi (R-WY), Orrin Hatch R-UT), and Dean Heller (R-NV) sent a letter to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy opposing efforts to expand the RMP program to include ammonium nitrate. Specially, the Senators say such action would be “inappropriate and redundant” given that the Occupational Safety & Health Administration has rules the address the safe storage and handling of this material. The letter was prompted by EPA’s specific request for information on this regulatory option as part of its follow up to the President’s EO 13650 on improving chemical facility safety and security. IME agrees strongly with the position taken in the letter.
