01/15/2014

Washington, DC - Hazardous materials are delivered safely to their destination over 99 percent of the time.  However, when incidents occur, the best defense is a well-prepared and trained responder.  The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME), in cooperation with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and with support from Nobel Insurance Services, has completed an update of the 2003 training video, “Responding to Highway Incidents Involving Commercial Explosives.”  The video and accompanying Leader’s Guide are for use by first responders.  These tools offer comprehensive and up-to-date training aids on the proper response to transportation incidents involving DOT Class 1 materials and ammonium nitrate.  According to Bob Royall, chairman of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Hazardous Materials Committee, “the IAFC is proud to partner with IME in support of fire fighter health and safety through better education and training.  Well done!”  The 24-minute video and 48-page Leader’s Guide are available free of charge from IME’s Website at http://www.ime.org/ecommerce/products.php?category_id=15 or PHMSA’s Website at http://www.phmsa.dot.gov/prepare-respond.
