Rockerfeller to Retire
Today, five-term Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) announced that he will retire at the end of his term in 2014. The 75-year-old senator has been involved in public service to WV for about 50 years. He is currently chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee which oversees transportation safety and security issues. He was a major player in crafting the safety titles, including the hazmat provisions, of MAP-21 in the last Congress. Althought he is retiring, Sen. Rockefeller will be expected to play a similar role in the development of successor legislation to MAP-21, which expires September 2014.
Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) had announced in November her candidacy for this Senate seat.
