Membership in the IME is available to corporations, partnerships or firms incorporated in the United States or Canada and engaged in the manufacture and distribution of explosive materials for commercial use (exclusive of fireworks or pyrotechnics) or industrial grade ammonium nitrate, and firms engaged in the business of supplying or supporting the commercial explosives industry.
There are two membership categories:
Firms that (i) manufacture and sell basic commercial explosives for use in general blasting operations such as quarrying, mining, and heavy construction, and (ii) manufacture and sell industrial grade ammonium nitrate, and (iii) make specialty explosive products, such as those used in the oil and gas industries or aerospace applications, shall be regular members. A "basic commercial explosive" is any product in commercial use except (i) blasting agents made by mixing ammonium nitrate and fuel oil; or (ii) by mixing ammonium nitrate and/or fuel oil with a water gel, slurry, or emulsion matrix purchased from another firm.
Firms that (i) store/distribute/sell commercial explosives; (ii) produce, blasting agents made by mixing ammonium nitrate and fuel oil with a water gel, slurry, or emulsion matrix purchased from another firm; (iii) transport explosives for commercial or military use; (iv) manufacture or supply equipment or materials used in the manufacture, storage, distribution, use or transportation of commercial or military explosives; (v) manufacture or supply explosives for military use; (vi) provide insurance or other risk management services to the commercial or military explosives industry; or (vi) engage in related activities as approved by the board shall be associate members.
