The IME is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) participating in the development of recommendations for international regulations at the United Nations.  The institute is represented on the UN Sub-committee on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and the UN Sub-committee on the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

UN Program Description

IME's UN program is managed by its UN Safety Consultant and overseen by the IME Board of Governors' UN Committee.  In addition to participation on the UN's TDG and GHS Sub-committees, IME furthers its UN-related work by actively participating in the TDG's Working Group on Explosives and other international fora.  The work of these two UN Sub-committees becomes the worldwide standard for development of:

  • Transport of dangerous goods (HAZMAT) regulations
  • Workplace handling of dangerous goods regulations
  • Hazard communications regulations
  • Standardized testing for classification of dangerous goods, including explosives

The work of the two UN Sub-committees is published in three documents and ultimately finds its way into the regulations promulgated by US DOT, OSHA, MSHA, ATF, EPA, and others.  The three UN documents developed by these sub-committees are:

  • UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (Model Regulations)
  • Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals
  • UN Manual of Tests and Criteria

These 3 documents may be accessed by clicking the [ Publications ] link at the top of this page.
