Women's History Month Series: Alicia Blazek
This week, IME’s Zeina Veyisoglu had a chance to sit and chat with Alicia Blazek, a plant manager at Nelson Brothers.
Q&A: From Operator to Plant Manager
Q: What’s your role, and who are you outside the job title?
I’m a Plant Manager, which really means making sure everyone on the team has what they need to be successful. A big part of my role is listening...understanding challenges, supporting the team, and helping things run smoothly.
Outside of work, I’m a wife and a proud dog mom to my dog, Russell! I love being outdoors, golfing, hiking, kayaking, and I’m definitely a foodie. If it gets me outside or trying something new, I’m in.
Q: How did you get into the commercial explosives and mining industry?
My dad has been in the industry for over 30 years, so I was introduced to it early. One of my first memories is going to work with him when I was about four or five years old and thinking it was the coolest thing.
As I got older, I realized it wasn’t a typical career path, and that actually made me want to pursue it even more. I started as an operator and worked my way up, which gave me a strong understanding of the work and the team behind it.
Q: The infamous imposter syndrome...Is it a thing for you?
There have definitely been moments of doubt, especially early in my career when I was sometimes the only woman on the team. I remember wondering if this was really where I was meant to be. But over time, experience builds confidence. I was lucky to have people around me who encouraged me and pushed me forward. Eventually I realized I could do it and from there I just kept going. And, Nelson Brothers really cultivates a culture of confidence for every single employee.
Q: What advice would you give your younger self at the start of your career?
Don’t doubt yourself. There will be challenges, but they are not failures, they are lessons. Every mistake is an opportunity to learn. I’d also say don’t take everything so seriously. Most things can be fixed. Enjoy the journey and don’t be afraid to take risks.
Q: What’s one misconception people have about the commercial explosives or mining industry?
People don’t always realize how supportive the industry can be. In my experience, there’s a strong team culture and a lot of people who genuinely want to see others succeed.
At Nelson especially, the support has been incredible. If you want to grow, the opportunities and resources are there. Now that I’m in a leadership role, I’m excited to help bring more women into the industry and support their growth.
Q: What keeps you motivated during challenging moments in your career?
Knowing that I have a strong team around me. It’s empowering to work in an environment where you feel comfortable asking questions and learning from the people who came before you.
Q: What skills or qualities have helped you succeed the most?
Being a good listener has been key. I also try to stay organized and focused not just on the work, but on the people doing the work. I keep an open-door policy and try to be approachable. Over time I’ve also learned the value of staying calm and steady as a leader.
Q: What message would you share with the next generation of women entering this industry?
Don’t give up. Set your goals and go after them...anything is possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, raise your hand, or share your ideas. And don’t let the perception of a male-dominated industry hold you back. There’s a place for you here.
Q: What song best represents you in your career?
“Headstrong” by Trapt and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” A little determination mixed with a little fun.
